Why does my Ariens lawn mower keep stalling? ›

Ariens Lawn Mower Fuel Cap

If the fuel cap vent is clogged, air won't be able to enter the tank and a vacuum or “vapor lock” will occur. This stops the flow of fuel to the carburetor causing the engine to stall. To determine if the fuel cap vent is clogged, try slightly loosening the cap and then starting the engine.

The fuel filter might be clogged. A clogged fuel filter is most commonly caused by leaving old fuel in the lawn mower. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the fuel filter and prevent the engine from starting.

Open the throttle.

The will usually be a lever on the handle of the lawnmower or on the body of the engine. Put the throttle lever in a mid-to-high position. If you skip this step, the engine won't be able to keep going once you've started it. If the mower is cold, set the choke.

The Carburetor Is Dirty

When the carburetor becomes dirty or clogged, it cannot balance the air and fuel properly, which causes your engine not to start and not cut grass. You might hear the mower turn on for a few seconds, but a dirty or clogged carburetor cannot keep a mower powered for long.

Deposits inside the carburetor can clog fuel and air passages and reduce performance or stop the engine altogether. Luckily, you can take care of many of these problems quickly and easily; often without even removing the carburetor from the engine.

If your lawnmower keeps dying, the carburettor is always the first part to check. But it's not always the cause of the problem. If your lawnmower starts then dies, a blockage in the fuel cap vent is also a possible problem. Before you start mowing your lawns, you probably fill up the fuel tank.
